Standby fares cost $69 one way per person except when flying between:
Auckland and Dunedin which is $93 one way per person
Auckland and Queenstown which is $89 one way per person
Wellington/Christchurch and Dunedin which is $72 one way per person

With Grabaseat Standby fares, you could fly to a range of destinations on non-stop services, so long as there is an empty seat available. Please note: Payment is by valid debit or credit card only and you must be an Airpoints™ member.

Given last minute bookings, the weather, technical issues and other factors beyond your or our control there is no way for us to tell you whether a flight will or will not have standby seats available. In some instances Standby fares won't be available for sale, even at the airport. The only way to know is to head in to the airport and try your luck. That is half the adventure! If you already have a Flexi Fare booked on the day you wish to travel, you will not be eligible for a Standby fare.

Standby fares are only available between 10am - 3:30pm and you must be at the airport 60 minutes before the flight you are interested in departs.

Join Airpoints
First, you need to be an Airpoints Member.

Visit Airport
When you find a flight you are interested in, head on down to the domestic terminal at least 60 mins prior to departure. Don't forget your Airpoints™ and remember not all flights will be available every day.
Buy voucher
Only available at the airport remember.
Head for the Grabaseat Standby desk at the Air New Zealand Domestic terminal, and buy a one way Standby voucher for travel departures only between 10am & 3:30pm. At airports that don't have ticketing facilities tickets are sold over the phone so make sure you don't leave until the last minute in case of waits on the phone.
Waiting ...
Have a wee wait, brimming with excitement in the hope that a seat will be available.
Check-in
Then 30 minutes prior to departure, head back to the Grabaseat Standby desk to hopefully collect your boarding pass and drop off your bags.
